Orji Uzor Kalu, the Senator-elect for Abia North Senatorial District has just announced that he is dropping his quest for the position of the Deputy Senate President due to the endorsement of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege by the National Working Committee of their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former Abia State Governor revealed this via a statement which was released by his media office with just a few hours to go for the 9th National Assembly to be inaugurated. He pledged to give his support to the party’s choice for the Deputy Senate position.
Kalu further made it known that he was always going to abide by the whatever decision have been taken by the leadership of the party, and President Buhari.
He said, “I decided to throw my hat into the ring to contest for the position of Deputy Senate President after wide consultations with stakeholders especially my political associates, friends and colleagues.
“However, I use this medium to announce my withdrawal from the race in the interest of the APC and Nigeria at large.
“I contested and won election as a Senator on the platform of the APC and as such, I cannot go against the decision of my party.
“The party, I am optimistic will consider the South East for other principal positions in the Senate and House of Representatives for the sake of national unity.
“The South East should be well represented at the top hierarchy of the ninth National Assembly.
“The ninth National Assembly will work harmoniously regardless of party affiliations to ensure that the executive and judiciary arms of government are complemented in a bid to build a prosperous Nigeria.”
As he pledged his commitment to the party, Kalu further showed his appreciation to President Buhari for displaying a fatherly role while piloting the affairs of the party.
Meanwhile, one of the top contenders for the position of the Senate President in the 9th National Assembly, Senator Ali Ndume has arrived at the premises of the National Assembly at about 7:20 am on Tuesday, 11th June 1991.
The Senator was noticed to have exchanged pleasantries with some people in the complex upon his arrival as he went straight to the mosque within the National Assembly complex to say his prayers.
The Senator-elect for Imo West district, Rochas Okorocha was also noticed at the premises of the Federal Parliament and was sighted going into the annexe office of the Senate President at about 7:45 am.
Details are still sketchy as to whether Governor Rochas was invited or if he had received clearance from the Independent National Electoral Commission to partake of the inauguration.
PM News, however, reports that, at the time for accreditation, the former Governor of Imo State was not allowed to undergo accreditation with other National Assembly elects.
Still, on the National Assembly election, feathers were ruffled after a policy analyst, Ide Iguabor, claimed on Channels TV that Hon. Gbajabiamila who is gunning for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives had doled out $10,000 each to APC House-elect members to garner their support.
