The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued a nationwide advisory to immigrants, reminding them to report any change of residence within 10 days. Failure to do so may result in missed mail containing critical updates about their immigration process.
This notice follows rising confusion among some immigrants who mistakenly believe that updating their address with the United States Postal Service (USPS) also updates their information with USCIS. The agency emphasized that USPS and USCIS operate independently and do not share address updates.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), USCIS clarified:
“Changing your address with @USPS will not update your address with USCIS, and USPS will not forward mail sent by USCIS.”
To prevent delays or missed communications including interview notices, case decisions, and Requests for Evidence (RFEs) USCIS urges individuals to update their address with both USPS and USCIS.
Who Must Update Their Address
All non-U.S. citizens residing in the U.S. are required to update their address with USCIS, with exceptions for A and G visa holders and those visiting under the Visa Waiver Program.
How to Update Your Address
1. Online through USCIS Account
- Visit uscis.gov and log in or create an online account.
- Go to the “My Account” section and choose “Change of Address.”
- Enter your new address using the correct USPS-approved format (verify using the USPS ZIP Code lookup tool).
- If you have pending or previously filed cases, you must enter their receipt numbers to ensure your address is updated for each case.
Using the online method updates your information in USCIS systems almost immediately.
2. By Mail (Form AR-11)
- Download Form AR-11 from uscis.gov/ar-11.
- Fill in both your old and new address details.
- Mail the completed form to the address listed in the instructions.
Note: The paper method may require further action, such as contacting USCIS directly to ensure all cases are updated.
